Looking for New Zealand Standards?

The Library has access to New Zealand and Australia/New Zealand Joint standards in full text.

On the Library Homepage go to Online Resources & Databases.” Select Aotearoa / New Zealand Resources. Scan down to S. Select New Zealand Standards.

i. Search by entering the standard number only, e.g. 1491 or the standard title.
ii. Select the required standard from the list.
iii. Click on the standard title which brings up an information page.
iv. Click View PDF .

When printing from the Standards database take note of the page numbers on the screen. Standards have been scanned with the cover being page one therefore the page numbers do not match the paper copy.

The database also contains indexes to ISO, IEC & BSI standards.
NOTE – NZS/AS standards are Australian standards adopted for use in New Zealand but they have not been developed as Joint standards and are not available in full text.

Standards New Zealand The Library has access to New Zealand and Australia/New Zealand Joint standards (NZS and AS/NZS)  in full text from the Standards New Zealand Website.   The database also contains indexes to ISO, IEC & BSI and NZS/AS standards.

These documents can be downloaded as PDF’s from both on and off campus.  The database is linked from Online Resources & Databases under “Aotearoa/New Zealand” and the categories under “Trades Innovation Institute.”

Get Creative

Creative Festival 2009The upcoming CPIT Creative Festival will showcase some of the amazing talent we have on campus, be sure to get to FINALE which brings to the stage outstanding performances from the School of Jazz, Circo Arts, Te Puna Wanaka and the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Arts (NASDA).

I love that  the we have a Faculty of Creative Industry that  exposes us to all this creativity. It is wonderful to have students who wander around campus singing, or unicycling.. and it provides students and staff with opportunities to attend lunchtime concerts, plays, performances … or get a  haircut! and it means we get to buy some wonderful books and magazines for the Library!

Explore your creativity – check out resources for Circo-arts, Fashion or Hairdressing.

New Zealand Book Month @ CPIT Library

New Zealand Book MonthOctober is New Zealand Book Month, so get reading some great new books written by New Zealanders and be part of this annual event.

You can browse a selection of recently published New Zealand books at the library’s ‘NZ Book Month’ display. These books cover a wide range of subjects from photography in ‘Peter Peryer Photography’ by Peter Peryer to money managing in ‘Your Money Personality’ by Liz Koh.

If fiction is more your style check out the revenge novel ‘Misconduct’ by Bridget Van Der Zijpp or the mystery novel ‘The Crocus Hour’ by Charlotte Randall.

The good news is all books on this display are available for loan.  Remember if they are already on loan then you can reserve these titles through our library catalogue.  If you are unsure how to do this then our online guide will help.

New databases covering 160 subjects

The library is very pleased to announce new online resources available immediately from our Online Databases and Resources  pages.  The core resource is Proquest Central which is a multidiscipline database offering over 9745 journal titles in full text and covering 160 subjects.

In addition we have some new databases covering more specific subject areas such as ABI Inform for Business, Health and Medical Complete for Nursing, Midwifery and Medical Imaging; and a new computing database.

We also now have some databases covering areas that haven’t been well catered for in the past such as psychology , biology and social science.

In order to make way for the new resources we will be discontinuing some existing products in 2010, most notably Business Source Premier and Academic Search Elite.

Teaching staff are encouraged to explore the resources.  If you have any queries or feedback then please contact the Liaison Librarian for your school.

Going out or staying in?

Now that the weather is warming up we have the choice of whether we go out or stay in when socialising with friends and family.  The library has some magazines to help you make your decision.  If you are going out have a look at the magazine called ‘Cafe’ which includes an eating out guide.  The winter issue has the results from the ‘New Zealand 2009 best cafe awards’.  Also have a look at the website Dine out for cafe and restaurant reviews.

If you are staying in, the library has magazines with great recipes to try.  Start with the magazine ‘Grill & Food service’ which includes a section on what foods are in season for the freshest ingredients.  For recipes have a look at ‘Cuisine magazine’ or ‘Australian gourmet traveller’.  The library also has many books with recipes and cooking techniques to help you.
