Tonga Language Week and ‘ota ika

Written by Georgie from the Learning Services.

Mālō e lelei! We celebrate Uike Kātoanga’i ‘o e Lea Faka-Tonga – Tonga Language Week from 5-11 September. There are more than 80,000 Tongan people living in Aotearoa and the culture and language is thriving.

During Alert Levels 3 and 4, many of us have been trying out new recipes at home. In celebration of Tongan culture I want to share one of my favourite recipes that you may like to try – ‘ota ika, a quick and easy Tongan raw fish salad similar to ceviche. It is delicious!

Ingredients:

400g firm white fish (moki, snapper or blue cod work well)

1 cup lime or lemon juice

1 green or red capsicum

2 tomatoes

1 small bunch of spring onions

2 red chillies

2 cups coconut milk

Salt and pepper

1. Wash the fish fillets and cut into bite-sized cubes, and dice all of the vegetables. Make sure that the spring onions and chillies are finely diced, and the capsicum is de-seeded

2. Place the fish into a mixing bowl and pour the lime or lemon juice in to coat the fish pieces

3. Combine the rest of the ingredients in a bowl and mix well.

4. Salt and pepper to taste.

5. Refrigerate the ‘ota ika for at least half an hour so that the dish is cold when served, and eat it within the same day!
