Contact – creative encounters

Contact2014

Yesterday saw the beginning of almost a month of presentations and events from CPIT Art & Design. If yesterday’s events: Stefan Roberts and Wendy Clarke talking about their photographic practice and a performance by Warren Maxwell (One Monday) were anything to go by the rest will be well worth scheduling into your diaries!

Take time these holidays to enjoy New Zealand IceFest

Spring may be here but chilly fun is still to be had at the New Zealand IceFest for the next couple of weeks.  Head to Hagley Park where you will find the Ice Station, an ice rink, Still Life (a sensory experience of Jane Ussher’s photographs of the Antarctic), movies, talks, food and entertainment. CPIT’s Manager of Food & Hospitality and Culinary Programmes Dennis Taylor will be there during the weekends demonstrating  at IceFest and undertaking carvings for the Antarctic Season Opening Function. Dennis has 15 years experience in ice carving which includes experiences in Sapporo Japan,  Harbin China and Lubeck Germany, working on large events and competitions.  Dennis has an Antarctic affiliation that includes a summer season as a chef at Scott Base in Antarctica.

Other exhibitions on involved with the Antarctic ice theme and New Zealand IceFest are on around the city as well and can be found at: the Canterbury Museum, The National and Form Galleries.

Designing for Christchurch

This week CPIT hosts projects featuring ideas for Christchurch by students of Victoria University’s School of Architecture. The projects will be on display in the Rakaia Atrium at CPIT from December 8 – 16.

These projects are the work of 4th year Architectural Studies Masters students who were in Christchurch earlier this year.

As part of their studio project they worked with selected Architectural practices from Christchurch, Wellington and Melbourne. Some of the project ideas are ‘Gap Fillers’ around the city. All the ideas provide a vision of what could be…..

Designing for Christchurch

Fashion Street

Check out the current exhibition in the Library featuring the work of our Fashion students. The display faces out to the Atrium creating a ‘shop front’ feel.

To support the Fashion students the Library subscribes to Berg Fashion which includes the World Encyclopedia of World Dress and Fashion, and a large image bank… always useful when looking for inspiration. We also stock exhibition catalogs from international exhibitions, books on fashion photography and an extensive video/dvd collection

It is wonderful to be able to show-case the talent of CPIT students, and while I do miss the High Street it is exciting for the Library to be able to host a variety of events and exhibitions.

Design students also have a couple of pieces of work in the library at the moment, a shelving unit which is blending in very nicely

…and a study work space incorporating one of the bean bags over by the Watching Wall.

The development of a Creative Hub at CPIT has  led to increased collaboration and co-operation, and improved links with industry which will benefit CPIT students and local businesses. The opportunity, moving forward, is to nurture those relationships and create our own new normal, better than before.
