Queen’s Birthday Weekend 2020

Both branches of Ara Library will be closed from 5 pm on Friday 29th May –  8am on Tuesday 2nd June as it is the Queen’s Birthday Weekend.

The Queen’s Birthday public holiday is held on the first Monday in June. New Zealand has ten statutory holidays, of which Queen’s Birthday is one.

Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday is actually on 21 April, but it is celebrated on various dates across the Commonwealth of Nations to fit with each country’s roster of public holidays.

Those who have the day off will spend it with family or friends or will use the long weekend as a opportunity for a extended holiday away. It is an excellent opportunity to spend time in the outdoors before winter fully sets in.

Queen’s Birthday also sees the announcement of the Honours’ List where the Queen makes appointments to the Order of New Zealand including Orders of Merit, Dames, Knights, Companions, Officers and more. These appointments are nearly always based on a person’s services to the community or the nation in sport, business, charity, the uniformed services and arts.

We will resume our usual hours from 8 am on Tuesday 2nd June.

We hope you have a safe and relaxing long weekend.

Library availability over the Easter break

Once again and despite the Covid 19 situation Easter is upon us.

No doubt Easter 2020 will be one to remember as we cannot do the usual things we would be doing at this time of the year…visiting our friends & family, going on vacation, Autumn trips into the back country or for those who are religious going to church.

Stay home this Easter….the outdoors will still be there after Covid 19 is defeated…

Despite our requirement to stay isolated we can still celebrate the holiday with those in our social bubble. This Easter break why don’t you plan a special Easter meal, go for a local walk/bike ride with your bubble, contact a friend or family member to check their status or just stay home & treat yourself to a stress free day or two.

Why not have a festive Easter meal over the holidays….

Here at Ara Library we will also be celebrating the Easter break so we will not be available from Friday the 10th April through to Tuesday 14th April. We will be monitoring our communication channels (both phone and online) but will not be able to answer any inquiries until the morning of Wednesday the 15th April.

From all of us here at Ara Library we wish you a happy Easter and we look forward to assisting you after the holidays.

Finally, please remember this Easter to stay home to fight COVID-19…

Labour Day Holiday: Monday 28th October 2019

Monday the 28th October 2019 is Labour Day. All Ara library branches will be closed on Monday. We will reopen at 8am on Tuesday the 29th October.

Labour Day has been a public holiday in New Zealand since 1900 and commemorates the struggle for the 8-hour working day and worker’s rights.

8 hour day
Slogan of the early Labour movement..8 hours labour, 8 hours recreation, 8 hours rest….

While many people will still be working the day can also be used for a multitude of alternate things. If the weather is pleasant, it can become a day of family outings and impromptu sporting events. You could stroll around the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, go to a cafe for a meal, have a picnic or spend time in the outdoors.

The Christchurch Botanic Gardens…lovely at this time of the year

From all of us here at Ara Library we hope you have a calm & restful holiday.

Library Hours over the Christmas period

The Christmas holiday season and the end of the academic year are upoun us. As a part of the holiday break over December and January our hours of operation will be changing.

For the period Monday 10th December 2018 -Sunday 27th January 2019 the Library will observe the following hours:

Our normal hours of operation will resume on Monday 28th January 2019. Please note we will be closed on Wednesday the 6th February for Waitangi Day.

From all of us at the Library we wish you a safe and happy Summer break.

Over Easter all Ara Campuses are closed

All Ara libraries will be closed over the Easter break from Friday 30th March (Good Friday) until Tuesday 3rd April. We will re-open on Wednesday 4th April. Relax over the Easter break and attempt to go chocolate free (if you can). I know this is a very difficult thing to attempt when chocolate is everywhere. Fresh hot cross buns straight out of the oven are a good tasty alternative. If you need to study at Ara the POD at Christchurch City Campus has 24 hour access and TG01 block at Timaru campus is available from 7:30am until 10pm. You will need to swipe your student ID card to get into these study spaces.

Happy Easter everyone!
